Intruders May Knock But They Can't Get In

Customer service lines and the main switchboard lit up one day at a major manufacturer and innovator of new products and technologies for heating water. Customers were calling in saying, “there’s something wrong with your site. You guys have given me a virus.”

The website had been hijacked. Intruders were redirecting the site’s links to external pages that downloaded viruses to visitors’ computers, creating a huge problem for the manufacturer. A call was quickly placed to LBMC Security Services.

“We didn’t even know where to begin with this problem—how to detect how much penetration actually occurred, what was the level of damage and what we could do to make sure it would not happen again, as well as make our corporate website functional again,” the IT manager said.

Within two hours, an LBMC Security Services team member was on site. While one LBMC staffer assessed damage and evaluated the possible fixes, another member of the team installed an Intrusion Detection Service device on the hardware so LBMC could remotely monitor inbound and outbound Internet traffic and notify the manufacturer of suspicious activity.

The website was back up that day and the manufacturer was advised on how to change its data layouts to better secure its site. Since LBMC Security Services stepped in, the manufacturer hasn’t suffered any intrusions despite 46,000 attempts in the first year or so after the penetration.

CRMC Finds Trusted Security Partner

Cookeville Regional Medical Center, like many healthcare facilities, provides quality care in an environment with limited resources and the priority is the daily needs of the organization, including the security of its computers and regulatory compliance to protect confidential patient information. Yet, there is often little time for planning, anticipating and working ahead.

“We are not unlike other organizations in that sometimes you just don’t know what you don’t know until something happens that creates a potentially harmful security event,” says Tim McDermott, assistant director of information technology.

While the IT team at Cookeville Regional Medical Center could address basic security requirements, it wanted to make sure that information was as secure as it could be and engaged LBMC Security Services on a trial basis to help ensure heightened security levels and compliance. The medical center, though, soon discovered gaps in security and compliance that needed to be addressed immediately. LBMC Security Services helped develop and execute a security plan that gives the medical center the confidence it needs in meeting required security needs. What started out as a temporary project for LBMC Security Services quickly evolved into an ongoing security protocol.

Spyware Monitoring Leads to Increased Productivity

AmSurg Corporation, a national group of outpatient surgery centers, chose LBMC Security Services’ Intrusion Detection Service to monitor the traffic entering and leaving the company’s network. Intended to identify viruses and other intruders looking to infiltrate the company, AmSurg discovered a side benefit—spyware detection.

The AmSurg IT department had been dealing reactively to the problem created when employees picked up spyware on their laptops and then hooked them into the company network. When employees complained about poor laptop performance, the IT staff repaired the spyware-infected machine.

Using LBMC Security Services’ Intrusion Detection Service spyware monitoring feature, AmSurg was able to use the collected data to proactively fix infected machines. LBMC took only a couple days to create a customized spyware reporting system for AmSurg. The quick turnaround was greeted with enthusiasm from Andy Sisco, associate vice president for IT. “For most security-type applications, custom reporting is either something you have to develop yourself or it’s just not available,” he says.

“LBMC Security Services worked with us to get an XML-formatted report that we can import into our help desk system. It creates a ticket for every computer that’s infected,” Sisco explains.

The results? AmSurg has seen increased productivity for computer users, which has led to higher levels of internal customer satisfaction for the IT department. As Sisco says, “IT is proactively looking out for their interests as opposed to just being there to react when they have a problem.”

“It was clear LBMC Security Services was different from other providers. They are a highly knowledgeable group of security professionals. Their leadership was involved throughout the process so we always felt we were getting the very best in service and security advice,” McDermott says. “They are now direction extensions of our IT team.”

Challenge: Outsmarting Hackers

“We have a security protocol, but I am also aware that hackers are getting smarter,” says Kenneth Sullivan, Information Technology Offi cer for TRPC. “We are not satisfied with just what the company knows is secure, we want that ‘extra blanket’ of security. When client payroll and electronic files are being sent to TRPC, every precaution must be taken. We want our clients to feel confident that their information is as secure as possible with TRPC,” says Sullivan.

Solution: A Security Partner

During a recent IT audit conducted by Lattimore Black Morgan & Cain, PC (LBMC), Mark Fulford, a partner with the accounting firm, suggested TRPC should consider Managed Security Services as an addition to its current security program. Fortunately for TRPC, LBMC provides these services through an affiliate, LBMC Managed Security Services, LLC. “Working with LBMC Managed Security Services has been great. They came in, determined what was needed, and installed the equipment to monitor our server activities 24 / 7 / 365. We know it is working - and because security is all they do, LBMC stays abreast of the latest trends and techniques,” says Sullivan.

Results: Peace of Mind

TRPC clients have peace of mind that their information is secure, and Sullivan feels this additional measure is just another move toward the “highest quality” model that TRPC has built a reputation for in this industry. “It is working,” says Sullivan. “We see regular reports of server traffic and possible threats. Who knows if a possible threat could develop into an actual one, but we are not taking that chance. With LBMC Managed Security Services as our additional ‘security blanket,’ we feel confi dent that we have minimized the risk of that ever happening.”
